This coming Sunday (23rd June) is Tarasque Sunday.
According to the "Golden Legend", it caused grief in Province, France. The local armies and adventuring parties couldn't take it out. St Martha managed to charm the monster, and lead it back into town. The townsfolk killed it - St Martha's Dominate Monster DC being so high that it kept failing it's save even while the townsfolk were whaling on it. Martha then rebuked the town and preached some gospel to them. They converted to Christianity, and were so upset over what they had done they named their town after the monster. Tarascon.
D&D added an "r" to the Tarasque. Avoiding legal drama maybe? Here I was thinking that it was original D&D property!
