Keen to know what folks would like best:
  • Reddish, Mars like desert.
  • Brighter, sandy desert

And as for the scenery:
  • dunes.
  • rocky outcrops.
  • ruins
  • mix of some or all of the above.

Maybe yellow sand. So we can line the desert tiles up with the beach tiles.

I think dunes.
There is placeable scenery that can do rocks and ruins

Could you please post photos of those hill-to-small-cliff pieces and the beach for me? Would be good to see them so I can match them up.

I think this sand will be too dark to pass as regular desert sand. I may have to experiment painting it up.

I've kind of given up hope of making this match the sand on existing tiles. May go for a redish Mars like terrain instead of white desert sand? This would be a shame because I was hoping it could double as underwater scenery.

Will test a few strip's of different colours and see how they turn out.

So left is just sand with PVA. Going right gradually adding more white paint. Top of each strip is sealed with more PVA with white paint. The difference is barely noticeable.

The red strip is PVA with a bit of red paint. I was expecting it to be dark, but not that dark. If I go that direction would go for a more tan/orange rather than straight red.

EDIT: The photo is much lighter than it looked in real life.

The sand we used on the beach tiles was
sand we collected from a pile down near the river,

From memory we painted the surface a yellow colour
then glued the sand down (which was dark),

they ended up like my pictures: See

I saw that.

I thin the splinter in my butt is that desert sand should look different from wet sand you'd find on the beach or near a river. So far, no matter how I put it down, it looks like wet sand and far from the desert look I'm going for.

I've been searching for tutorials, and almost every one I've seen just paints over the sand with spray paint. This works well on boards and such, but I'm a little worried about it for the mat. It needs to be flexible so it can be rolled up. Currently searching the Bunnings catalogue for flexy acrylic spray paint.

Hey mate.
Dont forget that if you put sand on glue and then roll it up. Heaps of sand will come off.

Maybe look at reptile enclosure products for inspiration. They have desert rolled up mats that you can put in the enclosures.

Also you could get a mat that is already the yellow colour you want and that provides the base colour and the sand provides the texture.
Similar to what big t was saying by painting the colour in first.

This is actually what gave me the idea. Saw a a sheet of the stuff in Penrith pet shop.

there are also some tutorials on youtube I'm basing it on.

So the plan is to put a layer of acrylic caulking down on a drop sheet, and then glue the sand onto it.

If this works out my next project is likely to be a forest floor mat. The ground cover on a forest floor has a lot more variation than the standard grass terrain we play on. It's less green and a bit darker. Looking forward to that one, but the desert is a bit of a test to see what works.

I was going to add some sand on top with watered down PVA, but I don't think I will now. The colour and texture seem just right as it is.
I will do some tests and see how it turns out, but I suspect this will do just fine.

EDIT

Tests

So from left to right, the first one is with sand stuck down and then sealed with diluted PVA. As I feared, it's way too dark.

The second patch is with a diluted PVA seal. It actually lightened it up a bit.

The last patch on the right is unmodified. I folded it and scratched it to see how durable this stuff was. Very flexible and could probably stop a bullet.
